Misfits, runaways, drug addicts, and other disaffected youth who rebelled against their parents and mainstream culture found themselves caught in Charlie's orbit. He made drugs available, particularly LSD, which made these hangers-on malleable. Charlie exploited their vulnerabilities, desire for safety, and a sense of belonging, as well as the search for personal identity, to achieve wealth, fame, and power.
